Under the supervision of Manager, Special Needs. The primary function of this job is to assist students with exceptional educational needs (EEN) to be successful and employable by providing a variety of accommodations in accordance with Section 504(e) of the ADA.  Work with an assigned program or location to recommend appropriate academic placement, skill assessment, and registration in MATC courses.  To provide educational support in the learning activities of students with EEN in the Learning Center; to make accessible MATC programs and services to students with exceptional educational needs and act as liaison between faculty, staff, and students.  Work requires exercise of judgment and discretion in a wide variety of duties utilizing established policies and procedures.

Employee works either as part of a support service team or may be required to work independently to devise, modify, and adapt situations and make decisions to meet the needs of students with exceptional educational requirements.  Supervision received is general in nature with standardized practices that enable the employee to perform independently, referring unusual situations to the supervisor for advice.

1.      Determine the factors and conditions that are likely to promote individual learning.
·
2.      Design, modify, and adapt supplemental instruction to meet the needs of EEN students.
·
3.      Interpret and/or clarify classroom instruction.
·
4.      Teach test taking strategies, study skills, comprehension skills, memory techniques, time management, research methods, and computer skills.
·
5.      Inform instructors of alternative strategies of instruction when teaching EEN students.
·
6.      Provide customized academic support to individual EEN students and/or small groups in areas such as composition, reading comprehension, and other areas.
·
7.      Serve as liaison between students and their instructors, other MATC programs and services, community agencies, such as Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Goodwill Industry, Center for Independence, and high schools and community agencies lending taped textbooks for blind and dyslexic students.
·
8.      Generate and maintain a variety of detailed individual student records required by funding sources.
·
9.      Document note taking and tutoring arrangements. At regional campuses, record time and pay sheets and other services provided.

10.   Explain career sheets and/or program information to students to assure understanding of program requirements and the various career opportunities at MATC.
·
11.   Advise students in relation to the selected program enrollment requirements and procedures, which may include financial aid information.

12.   Assist students in developing class schedules through identification of required classes, course availability, program changes, filled programs/classes, etc.
·
13.   Participates in in-service training, workshops, and other education activities as required or assigned.

14.   Performs related duties as required or assigned.
 
 Qualifications:
Requires ninety (90) approved college credits in a job-related area (Bachelor’s degree preferred) and two (2) years of work experience serving the needs of individuals who are disabled or any equivalent combination of training and experience to provide the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  1. Knowledge of instructional and related procedures for EEN students.
  2. Knowledge of various categories of learning styles of EEN students.
  3. Ability to teach students with EEN from diverse backgrounds and with different needs.
  4. Ability to communicate effectively with EEN students, faculty, community agencies, other MATC students and staff, and the general public.
  5. Ability to design, modify and adapt supplemental instruction to meet the needs of EEN students.
  6. Ability to use judgment, discretion, and decision making skills in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.
  7. Ability to work effectively as part of a support service team or to work equally as well independently.
  8. Ability to communicate effectively through both oral and written means.
  9. Ability to understand and support teacher-student relationships.
  10. Ability to convert textbooks (Word,,PDF files) to Accessible format using Kurzweil, Adobe Pro Abbyy Finereader,etc.
  11. Ability to support sue of assistive software such as Jaws, Windoweyes, Kurzweil, Dragon Naturally Speaking, and Wynn Software, etc.
  12. Ability to support use of assistive technology such as CCTV’s, talking calculators, magnification devices, etc.
