Spring Sanitation Announcement from Wanda Booker Via Alderwoman Coggs

Sanitation Spring Changes
March 10, 2014

• Nuisance garbage on private property has been transferred to DNS (effective March 1). Sanitation still handles debris removal on city owned vacant lots and properties.

• Weekend clean up box reservations started March 1 for placement April19 – July 26. Only 13 boxes per Saturday. Forward requests to Sandy at X3345.

• Bulky items larger than 1 cu yd can be scheduled for pickup for $50 for up to 4 cu yds and $150 for 4 – 6 cu yds. Piles less than 1 cu yd are collected by the regular garbage crew. Crews do not pick up appliances, TVs, computers or other electronics. Residents can dispose of those items and other household debris at self help for free.

• Brush collection resumes April 1. Brush piles must be smaller than 2 cubic yards or the size of a standard couch. Brush cannot be mixed with other debris as it is picked up separately for composting. Residents can also take brush to self help stations.

• Heavy sweeping is scheduled to start March 23 (weather permitting). Brooms will work night and day shifts to sweep winter’s remains from all city streets and alleys as weather permits (above 32F). Heavy sweeping should be complete by early May, when regular scheduled sweeping begins.

• Year round garbage cart set out routes start April 7 with calendars running through March 2015. Residents with front collection must bring their carts to the curb on the designated collection dates. Garbage cart set out tags will be hung in late March.

• Summer recycling cart set out runs from April 7 – December 5. Residents with front collection must bring their recycling carts to the curb on the designated collection dates. Most residents will receive a recycling cart collection every 3 weeks with certain routes collected twice-monthly. Bins are collected weekly. Schedules will be distributed before the first set out collection date.

• Summer self help hours run April 6 – November 22. Operating hours are:
Tuesday – Sunday7AM – 3PM
MondayCLOSED
Closed on most City Holidays and furlough days

• Project Clean & Green runs from April 14 – June 4. The program will start in the area roughly bounded by N 60th St, Keefe Av, North Av and the freeway. Residents can set out excess household debris on their designated Clean & Green pickup date. Certain items including appliances, haz waste, and construction debris are not allowed.

• Carts – properties with more than one garbage cart per unit are charged $15 per quarter on their municipal services bill for each extra garbage cart. Inquiries go through the Water Works customer service center and are forwarded to Sanitation staff for investigation and resolution.
