Selected Artists Statements

Blanche Brown:
"Nothing can stop the forward momentum of our nation, no matter how reckless things may seem today...despite visible efforts to stop inevitable change, the future state of our nation is poised to favor the underrepresented, the underdog, the underserved.”

Evelyn Patricia Terry:
"I prefer to focus on what is good about America and our most common relationship to each other as human beings. Is it that America beckoned, we came 'somehow' and were summoned here "hook or crook" and must make the best of it? We must organize to create the reality we want with every ounce of energy we can muster up.  Otherwise, by default, we create what makes us miserable with every ounce of energy we can muster up. We who know must hold a steadfast vision for our good."

Della Wells:
"As a self-taught artist, I explore story, fairy tales and myth in my work. For me, a black woman, I find the American legacy, wrapped and layered in story, fairy tales and myth - blinding many of us to the horrors and injustices that built this country. In my artwork, I explore the colors of the American flag and what it means in the magical lands I create - run by black women. In my land black women and girls are searching to be free, something many must mask in America. My artwork, much like the American image, looks like a sweet and peaceful truth at first glance. However, if one examines closer, like fairy tales, they will find the hurt and pain but also hope to escape."

Note: Included in our regular gallery exhibitions is the Folk art of self-taught artist, George Ray McCormick, Sr., who produced carvings, cloth dolls, mixed media welded pieces and drawings for almost two decades before his untimely death in 2009. His work definitely reflects the Black urban culture of many American cities, including street life, customs and the religious commitment of many church people.
